Biotech Meet the Blogosphere

I’m sitting here in the Biotech and the Blogosphere breakout session at BIO 1008 in San Diego. It is the most sparsely attended session I’ve been to so far with only about 50 people in the room. 50 people who have admittedly made a point of being here to learn something, but given the overwhelming [...]

AR Post: Colorado @ BIO2008

Anchors away! An incredible party was had on the flight deck of the USS Midway, filled with a big 15 piece Big Band and World War II South Pacific theme complete with Polynesian dancers, palm trees, delightful island fare, marina breeze, plenty to drink and punctuated with a full moon and a tingling fireworks display, [...]

Colorado Puts Money Into Biosciences

Joining Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle in announcing initiatives for biosciences and stem cell research, a Colorada Governor Bill Ritter gave a talk today on Colorado’s growing biotech and bioscience economic sector, representing over 400 bioscience companies in the state.
Gov. Ritter just signed a bill putting $26.5 million investment in the industry through the new Colorado Bioscience [...]

Opportunities Abound

Attendees awoke to the news this morning about GlaxoSmithKline’s announcement that it will pay millions — $720 million to be exact — for Sirtris Pharmaceuticals. This is the stuff biotech CEOs dream about. And it was the buzz at many breakfast tables at this morning’s workshop, “Antibiotics: Bad Bugs – Few Drugs.”
The BNVC meeting, of [...]

BIO National Venture Conference Off to a Strong Start

While the economy may not be as robust as it has in recent years, there certainly was no sign of that at today’s Opening Luncheon. Jim Greenwood, our President & CEO welcomed attendees to the inaugural BIO National Venture Conference and cited these impressive stats:

140 top-level (VP and higher) venture capitalists – including 4 international investors – [...]

Welcome to Boston!

The marathon may be over, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty more activity going on here in Boston.    We’re here in Cambridge, one of biotechnology’s “hot-spots” for the inaugural BIO National Venture Conference meeting up with some of the newest early stage and seed stage companies seeking venture funding.  Stay tuned for more as the [...]

On Innovation

The afternoon sessions here at PGH really got me thinking about innovation. It’s a word you hear thrown around a lot in biotech – as well as many other areas of science and technology. Actually, it probably gets overused. But when you really think about the word’s true meaning, you realize that innovation is what [...]

From Bench to Bedside: How Do We Make a Difference?

“Addressing Global Health from Bench to Beside: Necessary Actions at Each State of the Value Chain” was the topic of today’s luncheon discussion. It was another high-level panel discussion with folks from industry, government and the nonprofit sectors. Two issues in particular that kept resurfacing. One was that the term “bedside” is means much more [...]

Think Globally, Act Locally

It’s a phrase we’ve all heard a million times, but I found it interesting in the context of today’s panel discussion on diagnostic testing for the developing world.
Dr. Jan Gheuens from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation made the comment “The research may be global but the delivery is local.” And when you think about [...]

A Bipartisan Solution for Global Health

I’m fascinated by priority review vouchers. The concept is a creative new mechanism that’s capturing a lot of people’s attention at the PGH conference. And how the vouchers came into being is even more fascinating. Basically, the vouchers are a means of encouraging R&D for conditions that, otherwise, would be largely ignored  - you know, [...]
